1) Product functions:People have used wood for thousands of years for many purposes, some of them are, for fuel or as a construction material for making houses, tools, weapons, furniture, packaging, artworks, and paper. Also we use wood to make pencil slats. Known constructions using wood date back ten thousand years.

2) Specifications and why were they chosen:

The wood wraps the graphite, making it easier for the writer to hold. Paint The paint is the yellow casing around the pencil. It is used as both a protective and decorative coating. Non-toxic paint is usually used in pencil production

3) Treatment applied to the material and how does this affect structure and performance:

Dried, stained, and waxed to prevent warping.

4) Primary form of the material at the start of the processing:

Primary form of the wood is Piece of wood.

5)The full manufacturing operational route for the product commenting on why this route is used:

At the Slat factory, pencil stock is cut into Pencil Blocks. The small amount of extra length is called “trim allowance” that bears importance later on in the process. Pencil Blocks are cut into “Pencil Slats” using specially designed circular saws. These saws are very thin in order to reduce the amount of waste in the form of sawdust. Due to the natural grain and defect characteristics of the wood, slats are sorted by width and grade for further processing. Slats without defects are called “full ply”. Some slats are cut to smaller widths called “narrow ply” or shorter lengths called “memos” in order to eliminate the defects and to produce a variety of usable grades and plies of pencil slats.

6) Comment on any testing, metrology, or quality processes that occur on the product

. Pencil Slats are treated with wax and stain to find uniform color and improve the machining and sharpening characteristics of the wood for future processing. The slats pass through a final inspection process and then are packaged and shipped to “Pencil Factories” all over the world.

7) Any specific environmental issues that the product may undergo or need to perform within i.e. stress regimes, corrosive environment, elevated temperature, commenting on any material microstructural aspects that may need to be considered.

The wood use to make pencils should dry off up to particular moisture content (10% - 12%). otherwise it will be problem when maintaining a standard. if not variability among same batch of pencil is high. It’s not good. if the wood is not properly dry, if use fresh wood, instead of dry wood, the wood will shrink with time, causing quality issues. if the wooden material not processed properly, insect termite damages will occur during processing.

8) An alternative material/ process combination that could be used for the part outlining any advantages that may be gained, particularly sustainability.

We can use hard rubber for making pencil slades.it very use full to save our thousands of trees.
